JOB PURPOSE:

Caterpillar’s Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) designs Caterpillar Advanced Power Products which include batteries, chargers, inverts, energy storage systems, controllers and fuel cells.  In addition, it designs and manufactures diesel and gas engines, ranging from 400 kilowatts to 16 megawatts of power, and the key engine systems such as fuel, air, after treatment and cooling which are used to power oil & gas, electric power, marine, rail and Cat machine applications around the world.

 

Caterpillar’s LPSD currently has an opening for a Senior Engineer – Analytics/Data Science in the LPSD Analytics team to create, develop and maintain product health and condition monitoring analytics.   The LPSD Analytics team supports product development and commercial services for reciprocating engines and advanced power systems.   The primary location for this position is at our Mossville, IL Tech Center facility. In this role, you will successfully lead projects to invent and develop analytics solutions for moderate to highly complex technical problems related to power and engine systems.  What sets LPSD Analytics group apart among other digital and analytical teams is the combination of deep analytics expertise coupled with engine or engineering domain knowledge.

 

The LPSD Analytics team analyzes engine data and develops analytics models for diagnostics, predictive and prognostic condition monitoring.  Tools used include applied statistics, machine learning techniques, and custom python codes.  The Senior Engineer – Analytics/Data Science contributes to this mission by acting as a developer for complex analytics models.  The main function of a developer in the LPSD Analytics team is to  investigate, design, and maintain analytics models indicative of product health and condition.  The typical team member has the ability to investigate failure modes and code those failure signatures into automated data analysis processes.  Independent coding and analysis work is completed as part of greater project objectives.  Total cost of ownership and supporting analysis project work may also be in scope.  Progressive project leadership will be assigned and expected based upon successful candidate’s experience.

 

JOB DUTIES:

The principal responsibility of Senior Engineer – Analytics/Data Science is to develop analytics models for Condition Monitoring, both engineering and commercial, of LPSD products (mostly engines, but can also include transmissions and electric power sources).

 

The Senior Engineer – Analytics/Data Science  will:

  • Investigate, code, and maintain complex analytics and statistical models in Python coding language.  Use applied statistics and machine learning techniques.
  • Investigate, with subject matter expert support, equipment failures and collaboratively diagnose faulty operation resulting in an actionable maintenance recommendations
  • Data aggregation; specifically the access, collection, cleaning, and sub-set identification to prepare data for analysis.  Custom code will be required.
  • Project leadership of complex engineering projects which may involve several Caterpillar business divisions or job functional areas
  • Execution of independent work, having deadlines, and efficiently execute tasks.
    Work in a fast-paced, collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment to develop innovative solutions for predictive maintenance

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated coding proficiency
  • Aptitude in data analysis and statistical methods
  • BS in an accredited engineering curriculum or related STEM field
  • Independent, detailed work execution within a team environment

Top Candidate Qualifications

  • Engine system and/or component knowledge
  • Demonstrated coding experience in python
  • Formal analytics or data science training
  • Experience in the manipulation and analysis of time series (continuous) data
  • Demonstrated project leadership and execution
  • Demonstrated excellent communication, initiative, interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Proficiency in software engineering workflows for data science (notebooks, managing environments, testing, Git, CI/CD)

Additional Information:

The desired location for this position is Mossville, IL.  The weekly work schedule will be a hybrid, with some collaboration focused days on-site and with the balance as work from home days.  Remote work locations will be considered for exceptional candidates.
