Create an Outline For Your Argumentative Essay-2021
A good outline is a road map to your destination. It will show you the route and help you choose the best path to reach your goal. It can provide an interesting, creative, or funny twist that may not have occurred to you otherwise (providing it's appropriate for the subject matter).
A good visual presentation of an outline also shows the structure and organization of your argument more clearly than just listing bullet points on a page. Here are some guidelines for creating an effective outline:
1) Don't get too specific – Outlines work best when they're very broad in scope (i.e., not too many details). For example, if your thesis statement is "The United States should adopt a national speed limit of fifty-five miles per hour," you could then outline your paper by stating:
The history of speed limits in the U.S. as background information for understanding current limitations and support for the claim that we need a higher nationwide standard.
Reasons why only some states have set their own limits at seventy or higher, including political issues such as differing regional driving habits, urban versus rural environments, and failure to account for local environment factors like terrain or weather conditions (not necessarily reasons that will convince anyone to raise the limit but supporting material about examples throughout history that show it has been done before and public support for doing so now).
The benefits that would accompany a higher national limit as well as the drawbacks, including both positive and negative impacts on fuel consumption, accidents, traffic flow, and insurance claims (again not necessarily compelling reasons to prefer one policy over another but supporting material and facts from studies already completed or underway).
This is an acceptable outline because it's still broad enough in scope to allow considerable flexibility in presenting each sub-argument without being too restrictive in terms of specific details or background information. The point here isn't to be nitpicky about which roads are used or what towns you will pass through along the way – it's simply a guide to keep you headed in the proper direction until your journey is complete.
2) Keep it short – Although no one can say for sure how many words the average, successful, high-scoring argumentative essay should be, a general rule of thumb is that your outline shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes to create (including brainstorming and writing time). A good guideline is to allow 1 minute per point or topic that you want to include in your paper. 3) Start with the main heading – You may have heard that people should start working on an assignment from the end instead of from the beginning because they can work down toward the bottom and progress toward the top. If you simply take the first heading that comes to mind, chances are that category will have too little or too much material to warrant filling up space in your essay.
4) Write down all possible categories for your main topic and subtopics for each of those – Don't stop at the first category you think of because that might not really be appropriate for your paper.
